I work as an IT Architect in the greater IBM’s CIO’s office looking after transformation of the internal IT infrastructure of the Growth Markets Unit – Eastern Europe, Africa, Middle East, through Asia Pacific (excl Japan) and Latin America.
In 2006 I decided to work from home the majority of time because I was attending lots and lots of teleconference at odd hours of the day, which has allowed me to convert 10 hours of commuting into something a bit more productive – like being a father or even sleeping occasionally.
The down side to working from home is that the social (strict definition of the word) aspects of work are lost – most interactions I have with my co-workers is via email, Sametime Instant Messaging or teleconferences which are all very formal interactions.
I must be doing something right as I was appointed as an IBM Senior Technical Staff Member in October 2009 – the first one in IBM’s CIO outside of North America.
Understanding the other things going on in a colleagues life, I think, helps you understand a bit more about them and therefore helps you see them as a more complete person. As such I am getting into social software as a means of keeping in touch with people I know or have met and the greater world out there.

So why “BadKoala” – that has come from a couple of sources.
As Koala is an Australian native, bear like (not a bear) animal that is mainly nocturnal, however because of its diet of eucalyptus leaves is in a constant state of apparent tiredness or semi sleep. I felt like that after a year of attending conference calls at all hours of the day and night – never catching up on sleep.
And “bad” that’s something I know and won’t tell, no matter how much you ask
